Gobo designs

The slides included are; a pink one, a green one, a purple one, a striped one, a checkered one, a star one and a cross one..... I have also created a sheet of certain patterns to go with to complete my idea......

200-300 words & psuedo code

The Gobo
The gobo light is a metaphor for an if/else statement. The aim of the game in this gobo light object metaphor is to get the right pattern and it is either true or false. This is the same as when using if/else statements in a code.
An if/else statement is when the computer reaches a condition in a code, for example in the metaphor the condition will be the addition of slides on the computer it might concern the position of the mouse. If the condition is true then the if statement will run in the metaphor this means the correct pattern will be shown, matching that of the pictures shown, in terms of a code the position of the mouse when placed in a certain area of the screen might make the image change colour. If the condition is false then the else statement will run, in terms of the metaphor this means that the wrong slides are placed and thus will not result in the same image as the picture shown, on the code this means the mouse is not in the right position and thus will make the image appear a different colour. If this metaphor was written into a code this is what it would look like;
for ( int L= plain light){
if(the pink slide and stripe pattern is placed on box){
the pattern is correct ( L=pink light, stripe pattern );
}
else (a combination of other slides are attached){
the pattern is incorrect (random pattern);
}

This pseudo code is only a segment and in a real code would continue on with a new condition each time a new pattern from the picture is recreated. The thing that is correct would change along with the condition.

Test model

I made my first test model first using paper to get the outline of how I wanted the box the sits around the light to look. I decided to use black card to create this light and I have decided to use LED torch which has a brighter light. I also made slides with patterns and cellophane on it... the box I created I but slits into to have the slides, slide through, however these slits interrupt the continuos light from the torch so takes away from the final pattern..... to overcome this I will either have blutak or velcro and make it so the pattern/colour gobo can attach to the bottom and the light will shine down straight on to the pattern rather than 'leaking' out the sides.... I also discovered that although the pattern can be seen in light it is more effective when it is darker... I think to overcome this I will make a half box thing that eliminates some of the light and helps the image to shine better and add to the metaphor and message I am trying to communicate....
SO that means next I will be making a similar box that has a circle at the top and circle at the bottom the circle at the top fits around the torch, at the bottom there will be velcro or blutak to help stick the slides.... I will still use the black card however...... I will also make a half box type creation using black card...this achieved by tuesday of next week..... In terms of the 200-300 words I will first look at creating the pseudo code which I will create by the end of the weekend..... I will include a written, plain english explanation with this to make it clear which I hope to achieve by next thursday at the latest..... the rest of the time I will spend making sure everything is clear....

My idea

The idea that I will work on is the gobo idea. This was used from the gravity pulsar code in which if/else statements are used to tell the computer when a click happens the colour changes when  the right or left mouse is clicked the 'pulsar' will change from fluid to rigid flowing....  this relates to the gobo idea because you are telling the light that it will stop projecting one thing and start projecting other things......

Time line

I decided to include my timeline for management separately as all my plans and how I would work to create them would all work under the same plan .... I have set no exact dates more a list of what i need to achieve in a certain order before the 27th of May

  • firstly I will choose my design
  • Next I will research more about how make the idea into reality using feedback from the interim presentation
  • Next I will purchase all relevant materials needed for the assignment (this will of course happen next week)
  • I will then proceed to make the object Im aiming to start this by the 21st at least and attempt to finish by the 25th
  • For the last two days I will use it to fine tune by object, taking a picture and writing the explanation
I will also, when I can, update my progress along the way of where Im at and research....

The best three ideas .....

My favourite ideas all relate to interactive codes that include both colour and movement.....
The first idea is the colour wheel......
This will be done by using clear plastic card which is 10c persheet.... I would need like 10 to 20 (just in case for mistakes also), these sheets would need to be coloured with different paints which I already have and a split pin which would only be a few dollars. the split pin would be pushed through all to create the wheel effect and allow the wheel to spin which would help to mix the colours. I think this is the most simple idea and shows how when there is one slide...... code........ it is one way but when another slide is added......... an if statement...... it appears another and when the another slide is added........ an else statement........... another variation can be seen. It would also be the most cost affective however I don't know how well the colours will mix...
My next idea is using coloured lights to create images in the dark....

This idea will involve glow in the dark pens and a dark box with paper...... I would make pens using glow in the dark paint and those glu / glitter pens this would cost roughly ten dollars....  I would also need to make a dark box with a viewing hole and place to put hands this would require cardboard... black material..... glue and dark sunglasses so roughly twenty to thirty dollars and paper which I have plenty of..... this metaphor shows the if/else statement because it allows interaction ..... which shows the change from one position to the adding of the new position.... with the glow in the dark pen if i could I might like to further this idea and have a light table that shines a colour and cover it with dirt or sand and allow for it to be drawn on thus creating the same effect but in a more unusual/ innovative way....
The last idea is my favourite the one using a gobo ......

This idea show perfectly how many if / else statements can change a code in a way that is familiar to anyone who has been in theatre, to a club or a disco...... I will create it sin a lamp which I already have , cardboard and cellophane.... this gobo lighting will be on a way smaller scale and will point only down. the light will be centred over a box type thing that will be used to slide gobo wheels in and out.... I will make numerous different gobo some with patterns simply by using cardboard to make a stencil and some with just cardboard has the border and cellophane to make colour appear... I think this is the best idea and shows both how if/else statements can change the code and therefore the appearance and also how the if/else statements can be complicated

Brainstorming.........

To begin I looked at the three different codes I have found and asked what is it about the actual image that i can relate to the metaphor of if/else statements and for each I came up with three ideas.........
For the abstract clock code I liked the idea that time created the action....... because it was this time an action occurred so as a result I found images that I believed related.....

I found these images of hour glasses lined up in a row......... if I were to choose this idea I would have three hourglasses lined up...... one would count minutes, another second and the last an hour this would work as a metaphor to show the if statements because it would show the relation between time and the action of the hourglass.

I found these images because I believed it could be the most straight forward metaphor....... a clock if a minute passes the minute hand will move........

I found these images of the bird drinking water..... there is something about the repetitive nature that the bird has that I relate to time and I thought this had potential for a design that would communicate the metaphor of an if/else statement...
The next images I found in relation to flesh light code.....with this code I liked the relation of colour and movement in relation to the if/else statement....
This is an image of a lava lamp...... I think aesthetically this image is very similar to the code however if I were to carry through with this idea I would make it more interactive eg. a person can shake the jar to make the parts move
This is an image of burning metal it causes great sparks of light and movement which relates the if else statement very well..... if I were to carry this idea I would make it a multi media design combination of a still with moving images shot onto it..
The last idea is using light to write in the dark I think it also shows how light and movement can show a reaction...... I would make this an interactive think perhaps using a black box and writing with glow in the dark ink like you can get with glowsticks............
The next lot of images relate to the gravity pulsar again I believe the colour and movement help relate the the if/else statement......

The first idea is quite simple using a colour wheel to combine primary colours to create secondary colours possibly even tertiary colours....... using the simple idea of mixing colours and using movement.....
The next idea is related to watercolour and water & colour..... it will show the interaction between water and added colours using the idea of fluidity.... If I were to carry out this idea I would use mix media of a video being projected on still images.....
The last idea and possibly my favourite idea is the use of a gobo and lighting....... so there is normal light but when a template is added a pattern or colour will show if another pattern or colour is added then another thing will show...... I think this would be the perfect metaphor for what if/else statements are.... simple idea and interactive....

research of other programming terms

Variables........................
According to processing variables mean..........
Variables are used for storing values. In this example, changing the
values of variables 'a' and 'b' significantly change the composition.
size(200, 200);
background(0);
stroke(153);

int a = 20;
int b = 50;
int c = a*8;
int d = a*9;
int e = b-a;
int f = b*2;
int g = f+e;

line(a, f, b, g);
line(b, e, b, g);
line(b, e, d, c);
line(a, e, d-e, c);

So this means that variables are things that hold values these values are
replaced with letters and numbers which tells the computer that when you
see this number it means that it is a value. This function is useful when creating
a code that has lots of one thing and enables the person who created the code
to easily variate a value. for example if there where four boxes and the variable
said int apple= 4 and each box had four apples inside and someone decided to
change int apple= 7, from 4 this would mean that 3 more apples will appear in
each box by them without someone having to go round each box and put four
more apples inside.........
This code is an example of how variables can be used

the if/else statement...........

This is the third code I have found in relation to the if/else statement on open processing called flesh light..... It is an interactive code that appears to be like metal being burnt with different colours or something like a lava lamp. There are heaps of if statements used through out the code and a few else statements..... they are used to change the appearance, the colour, speed and fluidity of the moving changeable shape.. This list that was accompanied with code shows just how many if statements the code contains
 Click the mouse to change colour
//Below are the controls
// if (key=='m')metal = !metal;
// if (key=='l')dolines = !dolines;
// if (key=='z')doellipses = !doellipses;
// if (key=='a')auto=!auto;
// if (key=='q')harukitmode = 1; //- TODO
// if (key=='w')harukitmode = 2; //- TODO
// if(key=='2')gmode=2;
// if(key=='3')gmode=3;
// if(key=='4')gmode=4;
// if(key=='5')gmode=5;
// if (key=='v')vnorm = !vnorm;
// if (key=='c')constant = !constant;
Although this code does rely heavily on interaction it does function on its own by the computer runs the code when an if statement comes true ie. if (key=='E'){exit();},
because the e button is pressed then the computer reads that it is suppose to exit the programme..... this code is similar to the second code in the interaction but there are independent events and therefore there are more singular if statements with out else statements.

the if/else statement...........

The second code I found from open processing is the gravity pulsar...................... it uses if/else statements throughout for  transformation and interaction of colour and shape. The code creates an abstract splash of colours................ by clicking the mouse the 'splash' that grows regenerates left for a fluid release and right for a more stylized reaction it also causes the colour to change.Unlike the clock this code relies on human interaction of clicking to kick in the if statement as the if/else statement tells the computer that if  the right or left mouse is clicked then the code that is currently running will change. This code is a good example of how an if and else statements can combine...

Thursday, 5 May 2011

the if/else statement...........

I found this code on open processing and it uses if statements quite heavily throughout the code in fact it is most of the code. The code is for an abstract clock . The code says that lines are related to seconds and so the code uses if statement to say if say one second passes a line will show at a certain point on the page, every second another line is formed and this creates a zig zag pattern right around the page. the code also uses if statements for minutes using the same as the second but dots per minute in twine the zig zagged pattern. Each time the second reaches a minute the zig zag pattern resets, each time the minute dots reach an hour they also reset. This code does not rely on mouse or key interaction and simply on minutes and seconds. It doesn't have else statements as well because each if statement is like a separate occasion not relying on there parts of the code as they a separate layers............... so to speak...

Project 3---------------------------- coding exhibition

The coding term I have chosen is if/ else statements
To begin I have found the definition for the 'if' statement on processing....................
Name

if

Examples
example pic
for (int i=5; i < height; i+=5) {
  stroke(255); //Set the color to white
  if(i < 35) {  //When "i" is less than "35"...
    stroke(0); //...set the color to black
  }
  line(30, i, 80, i);
}
Description                                                                                                                                                                             Allows the program to make a decision about which code to execute.
 If the test evaluates to true , the statements enclosed within the block
are executed and if the test evaluates to false the statements are not
executed.
Syntax

if (test) {
  statements
}
Parameters
expression any valid expression that evaluates to true or false
statements one or more statements to be executed
................so basically and if statement is used to tell the computer to execute a different code for example and if statement might say something like when the mouse is right clicked the ellipse that was originally black may turn pink and then when the right mouse is not being clicked the ellipse stays black...................
I next found the definition for 'else' statement on processing............
Name

else

Examples
example pic
for(int i = 5; i < 95; i += 5) {
  if(i < 35) {
    line( 30, i, 80, i );
  } else {
    line( 20, i, 90, i );
  }
}
example pic
for(int i = 5; i < 95; i += 5) {
  if(i < 35) {
    line( 30, i, 80, i );
  } else if (i < 65) {
    line( 20, i, 90, i );
  } else {
    line( 0, i, 100, i );
  }
}
Description Extends the if() structure allowing the program to choose between two or more block of code. It specifies a block of code to execute when the expression in if() is false.
Syntax
if(expression) {
  statements
} else {
  statements
}

if(expression) {
  statements
} else if(expression) {
  statements
} else {
  statements
}
Parameters
expression any valid expression that evaluates to true or false
statements one or more statements to be executed

so basically the 'else' statement is an extension of the if statement.............  on a basic level it works the same as the if statement; the computer will read the statement and follow the instructions ie. if the the r key is pressed the code will reset. The computer will only follow the code when the variation is done...... the else statement allows for there to be variations in the code for example if an 'if' statement read something like there is a circle but whilst the code is running if the mouses right button is pressed the circle will grow else if the left button is pressed the circle will shrink

Reflection

Project two; transformation......... I have learnt a great deal from this project, taking the basic knowledge gained from project one I was able to further my designs...... I learnt about how to put sound on and how to control this sound, i learnt more about the relationship between sound and colour and shape and how to combine these in order to create a transformation of a 'sound shape' which I believe has shown through in my end result.

My goal in the beginning of this project was to create not only a sound shape but a sound shape that related to a certain scene of fantasia, where Mickey is controlling shooting stars and making them collide to make fireworks. From this I created a storyboard of an interaction which I believed would be achievable for me. After the first interim presentation I took from it that I needed to make the design more interactive so I sat down at a computer and began to experiment using others codes off open processing  and from the tutorials  and made different codes that I believed would help me in the end result. After the presentation I got the feedback that I could simplify my sound shape and I went back to the 'drawing board' and through trail and error made the code which I have as my final.....
Problems and Solutions....... Through this project I encountered many problems which based around my lack of knowledge when it came to computers and codes....... to overcome this I first broke down what I wanted to achieve which were; click and drag, how to add music and make it play when the mouse was clicked, how to change the colour within the ellipse and how to make different ellipses interact with each other...... to solve these problems I went to processing references, used tutorials and went on open processing to see if anybody else had similar codes that could help further mine. By doing this I was able to solve a number of my problems however when I couldn't find a solution such as the interaction between ellipses I moved forward and worked out how I could create a code which still showed what i wanted it to show.
Improvement...
If I was to continue to work on this interaction I would want to............ make the ellipse colour controlled  completely by the sound, make it so the r button does not have to pressed for the sound to reset, perhaps if I had plenty of time I would want to develop it so each time the mouse was clicked an ellipse would appear and grow but depending if it was a right click or a left click to if it is a high noise or a low noise and this noise is only heard when touching another ellipse.....................
I looked on google images and found this image when i typed in transformation :-)

Final for project two transformation

My final for project two transformation......

To make work click the right button to make the ellipse expand this will also cause the sound of piano notes to grow click the left button to make the ellipse shrink this will also cause the sound of piano notes to go down. By pressing r the sound will reset.
The ellipse will also change colour dependent on where it is on the page....... the higher the ellipse the lighter the colour the lower the ellipse the lower the sound of the ellipse.....

Expand and shrink 2

In this one I have included colour the higher the mouse pointer is the lighter the colour of the ellipse ; white...... the lower the mouse pointer the darker the colour; red the colour works on a white to yellow to orange to red gradient....
Next step I want to include noise I am thinking the right click will make the piano scale grow whilst the ellipse grows, the left click will make the piano scale decrease with the decreasing ellipse I think that I will include a key function to reset the noise so it will continue to make the noise......
Im going to use garage band to make the piano noises

Next step

next step is to include the colour light yellow to dark red I think that I will try and do this by linking colour to the diameter of the ellipse so when the ellipse is large it is red and when it is small it is light yellow almost white..........

expand and shrink

This is my first step towards my final....... the ellipse will expand when the right button on the mouse is pressed and the shrink when the left button is pressed ........ the ellipse also follows the mouse pointer I included this because I want to make it interactive as possible whilst being a sound shape......

colour in relation to sound

 I want to include colour relating to sound and I will do my best to include it I found these images that I think helps show how the two relate

This picture shows how colours grows from blueish to a pinkish colour kinda like a rainbow
This Picture shows the relation between sound and colour,   the lighter colours are linked to quieter noises, the darker the colour is the louder the noise is....
I think that if colour is included, which I will do my best to include, it will get darker if the sound is lower and will get lighter if the sound is higher.....
I think that the best way to include colour is moving from light yellow to dark red, the lighter yellow being the higher sound and the darker red being the lower sound.....
I want to include this because I think these colours relate the most to the sound scales and it also links back to my original idea of including stars, kind of like the different stages of a stars cycle....

were to from here....

After doing my presentation I got the advise to make things more simple......... for a while after this I continued to try and achieve my first idea but I could not find out how to do this exactly so I moved ..... I began by looking at the two main elements of my design...... the bouncing interactive ball and the moving ellipses that are intended to be the sound shape..... first I looked at the moving ellipses and there interaction with the mouse ie.. the distance of the mouse in relation to how big the ellipses are or what colour and when the noise plays but this did not work how I wanted to so next I looked at my other element the interactive ball...... I want to make the interactive ball the sound shape I will probably make it so when the right click on the mouse will make the ellipse grow and have a growing scale of the piano and when the left mouse is clicked the ellipse will shrink and go down on the scale.......

Final presentation

Ok so for some reason the computer im on does not want me to put any sketches to view so Illl put the url in instead.....
This is my first attempt at creating an interactive code.... as the mouse moves the ellipse follows and changes the colour of the moving ellipses....

Next I looked at how I could make an ellipse appear by clicking and the influence the mouse had on the ellipse and how to use drag .......

The next thing I looked at was how to include the sound of chimes into a code and using my first attempt at interactive code I created this......

Next I wanted to incorparate a part that was more interactive and found a code of someone elses which was of a bouncing ball that came to the mouse when it was clicked

I used this code and combined it with my own original to create an interactive code that the many ellipses interacted with the mouse to change colour and size as well as having the ball to play with....

Next I wanted to combine the interactive code with sound of chimes but I also wanted to make the sound a more interactive part so now when the mouse is clicked the sound will begin to play.......

I have decided to have less circles and make them slightly larger next step is to find a way for the moving shape to interact with the static shapes and cause them to make a sound, change colour and shape........... I like this idea and would like to come back to it in future............ but prehaps I want to take away the space invaders type look I think it has.......

For the time being this is my final..... I have decided to combine the click to use music with the moving ellipses that change colour and size and the bouncing click ball........... I have decided to change the colour to variations of blues which I belive is more tranquil like the chimes which is the sound...... the colour changes depending on where the mouse is eg. the higher the page the lighter the lighter the blue, the lower the page the darker the blue....

As for where I want to go from here............. I want to go back to the static larger circles that only take up half the space and have them interact only with the bouncing ball so when the ball hits a higher ellipses the ellipse will make a the noise of a higher pitch of a chime, change to a lighter blue and expand before disappering the lower the ellipse the lower the sound and the darker the colour.... the 'player' then will be able to reset and make the ellipses reappear. The ball will also have the same function..... when the player clicks it will come to the mouse and they can throw it......
I found this code that I think will help me

Although it is a game I think the interaction between shapes will be benaficial for what I want to achieve.....

 I hope to achieve the rest by continueing what I have started of researching other codes and how processing works and also by using it I will also mind map in order to further how I can take the shape from just expanding to making it more of a sound shape................. this alll will be so much eaiser achieved once I have internet at home :-)

Project 2 ---------- Transformation

Whilst sitting in tuesday lecture and hearing of what I had ahead of me I tried to think of what could inspire me when the topic of Walt Disney came up and a short hand drawn anitmation was shown I knew I had my inspiration

Walt Disneys Fantasia!!!!
The part that I really like is the bit when Mickey stands on hilltop, rock thingand commands the stars what to do and makes fire works out of collosions so I decided to use this idea and created this story board.......

final wallpaper

The first of my wallpaper.......(inspired by material patern)...........

The second of my wallpaper....(inspired by a tutu)................

The third of my wallpaper......(inspired by my original material picture).....................
The final of my wallpaper..........(inspired by a ballet shoes)...................

I feel I have connected these through the black and white colours and line and curves and to a degree line weight.

ProjectOne--------Wallpaper

http://www.openprocessing.org/portal/?userID=10127
This is my open processing account where all codes can be found

After the presentation I looked at my images and decided that I will use the material wallpaper as the set......
I liked the way the material flowed and the lines interconnecting and the more natural feel that the texture of material has. After the last lecture I looked at how I could further this feel and idea into a set. After researching I found these images.............

I liked how, like the material, animal and insect prints flowed and had the same natural feel that the texture.I wanted to mimic that type of pattern but attempt to make it more replicas of the flowing material.
I attempted first the basic rough material shape;
http://www.openprocessing.org/visuals/?visualID=24775I next tried making the material have a feel that is like that of a tiger;
http://www.openprocessing.org/visuals/?visualID=24791
The way it turned out was not what I wanted so I went back to the 'drawing board'. I found many other images on open processing.org that where using an actual image with transperancy colour over top and I wanted to try this to see how it would work.
I found this image of a dress....
And attempted to use a section to create an image.......
http://www.openprocessing.org/visuals/?visualID=24821I liked this but I wanted to go further and actually use more coding skills so again, went back to 'the drawing board' and found images that I felt related to my original image..........

I began to play around with codes on processing and whilst trying something else I managed to make a pattern that was simple but I believed communicated my ideas, so as a result I have attempted to create abstracted pictures ........ I decided then to use simple black and white colours and make abstract images of material, material pattern, ballet shoes and a tutu.
Firstly the first wallpaper is an abstracted version of material pattern.........
http://www.openprocessing.org/visuals/?visualID=24813The next wallpaper is abstracted tutu.......
http://www.openprocessing.org/visuals/?visualID=24816The next wallpaper is a more abstracted version of my original material image......
http://www.openprocessing.org/visuals/?visualID=24817The last wallpaper is my attempt at abstracting ballet shoes.....

BTW

By the way these are the magazines I borrowed from the library that I got my inspiration from (although I did flick through other magazines these are the ones which I actually got images from)....

This one is called "urbis, DESIGN/LIVING/ARCHITECTURE"...... from 30 Nov 2010..... Its a New Zealand design magazine............
This one is called "Vogue"......... I think its from the 13 Jan 2011....... Its the british vogue........

DSDN 142_My fourth design!!!!!

With my last design I really wanted to tie together my first design and the last two and actually make it clear so I looked for a dress which had more texture and found these.....

I found this page and thought the layering of materials would work better for what I wanted to do combining graphic with flowing natural feel material has.......

I decided to quickly draw the images using water colour in order to get my ideas out faster, I looked at the dress and bow...
I decided to do a sketch using the dress and added a border wwith text to see how it looked and if it made it more graphic looking. I think though that the dress like this didnt work as well nor did adding red, I think I will just stick to the black and white for now!!! (The bottom picture is me trying to draw it with a bow and giving up!)

 The final image uses the a the bow instead of the dress which I think works better, and just uses black and white to make it more graphic which I think ties in with the second and third sketches whilst the bow ties in with the material of the dress in the first one.
Next week....... Again Paint then coding done by wednesday!!!!! alowing for plenty of mistakes to be fixed up!
