Gobo designs

The slides included are; a pink one, a green one, a purple one, a striped one, a checkered one, a star one and a cross one..... I have also created a sheet of certain patterns to go with to complete my idea......

200-300 words & psuedo code

The Gobo
The gobo light is a metaphor for an if/else statement. The aim of the game in this gobo light object metaphor is to get the right pattern and it is either true or false. This is the same as when using if/else statements in a code.
An if/else statement is when the computer reaches a condition in a code, for example in the metaphor the condition will be the addition of slides on the computer it might concern the position of the mouse. If the condition is true then the if statement will run in the metaphor this means the correct pattern will be shown, matching that of the pictures shown, in terms of a code the position of the mouse when placed in a certain area of the screen might make the image change colour. If the condition is false then the else statement will run, in terms of the metaphor this means that the wrong slides are placed and thus will not result in the same image as the picture shown, on the code this means the mouse is not in the right position and thus will make the image appear a different colour. If this metaphor was written into a code this is what it would look like;
for ( int L= plain light){
if(the pink slide and stripe pattern is placed on box){
the pattern is correct ( L=pink light, stripe pattern );
}
else (a combination of other slides are attached){
the pattern is incorrect (random pattern);
}

This pseudo code is only a segment and in a real code would continue on with a new condition each time a new pattern from the picture is recreated. The thing that is correct would change along with the condition.

Test model

I made my first test model first using paper to get the outline of how I wanted the box the sits around the light to look. I decided to use black card to create this light and I have decided to use LED torch which has a brighter light. I also made slides with patterns and cellophane on it... the box I created I but slits into to have the slides, slide through, however these slits interrupt the continuos light from the torch so takes away from the final pattern..... to overcome this I will either have blutak or velcro and make it so the pattern/colour gobo can attach to the bottom and the light will shine down straight on to the pattern rather than 'leaking' out the sides.... I also discovered that although the pattern can be seen in light it is more effective when it is darker... I think to overcome this I will make a half box thing that eliminates some of the light and helps the image to shine better and add to the metaphor and message I am trying to communicate....
SO that means next I will be making a similar box that has a circle at the top and circle at the bottom the circle at the top fits around the torch, at the bottom there will be velcro or blutak to help stick the slides.... I will still use the black card however...... I will also make a half box type creation using black card...this achieved by tuesday of next week..... In terms of the 200-300 words I will first look at creating the pseudo code which I will create by the end of the weekend..... I will include a written, plain english explanation with this to make it clear which I hope to achieve by next thursday at the latest..... the rest of the time I will spend making sure everything is clear....

My idea

The idea that I will work on is the gobo idea. This was used from the gravity pulsar code in which if/else statements are used to tell the computer when a click happens the colour changes when  the right or left mouse is clicked the 'pulsar' will change from fluid to rigid flowing....  this relates to the gobo idea because you are telling the light that it will stop projecting one thing and start projecting other things......

Time line

I decided to include my timeline for management separately as all my plans and how I would work to create them would all work under the same plan .... I have set no exact dates more a list of what i need to achieve in a certain order before the 27th of May

  • firstly I will choose my design
  • Next I will research more about how make the idea into reality using feedback from the interim presentation
  • Next I will purchase all relevant materials needed for the assignment (this will of course happen next week)
  • I will then proceed to make the object Im aiming to start this by the 21st at least and attempt to finish by the 25th
  • For the last two days I will use it to fine tune by object, taking a picture and writing the explanation
I will also, when I can, update my progress along the way of where Im at and research....

The best three ideas .....

My favourite ideas all relate to interactive codes that include both colour and movement.....
The first idea is the colour wheel......
This will be done by using clear plastic card which is 10c persheet.... I would need like 10 to 20 (just in case for mistakes also), these sheets would need to be coloured with different paints which I already have and a split pin which would only be a few dollars. the split pin would be pushed through all to create the wheel effect and allow the wheel to spin which would help to mix the colours. I think this is the most simple idea and shows how when there is one slide...... code........ it is one way but when another slide is added......... an if statement...... it appears another and when the another slide is added........ an else statement........... another variation can be seen. It would also be the most cost affective however I don't know how well the colours will mix...
My next idea is using coloured lights to create images in the dark....

This idea will involve glow in the dark pens and a dark box with paper...... I would make pens using glow in the dark paint and those glu / glitter pens this would cost roughly ten dollars....  I would also need to make a dark box with a viewing hole and place to put hands this would require cardboard... black material..... glue and dark sunglasses so roughly twenty to thirty dollars and paper which I have plenty of..... this metaphor shows the if/else statement because it allows interaction ..... which shows the change from one position to the adding of the new position.... with the glow in the dark pen if i could I might like to further this idea and have a light table that shines a colour and cover it with dirt or sand and allow for it to be drawn on thus creating the same effect but in a more unusual/ innovative way....
The last idea is my favourite the one using a gobo ......

This idea show perfectly how many if / else statements can change a code in a way that is familiar to anyone who has been in theatre, to a club or a disco...... I will create it sin a lamp which I already have , cardboard and cellophane.... this gobo lighting will be on a way smaller scale and will point only down. the light will be centred over a box type thing that will be used to slide gobo wheels in and out.... I will make numerous different gobo some with patterns simply by using cardboard to make a stencil and some with just cardboard has the border and cellophane to make colour appear... I think this is the best idea and shows both how if/else statements can change the code and therefore the appearance and also how the if/else statements can be complicated

Brainstorming.........

To begin I looked at the three different codes I have found and asked what is it about the actual image that i can relate to the metaphor of if/else statements and for each I came up with three ideas.........
For the abstract clock code I liked the idea that time created the action....... because it was this time an action occurred so as a result I found images that I believed related.....

I found these images of hour glasses lined up in a row......... if I were to choose this idea I would have three hourglasses lined up...... one would count minutes, another second and the last an hour this would work as a metaphor to show the if statements because it would show the relation between time and the action of the hourglass.

I found these images because I believed it could be the most straight forward metaphor....... a clock if a minute passes the minute hand will move........

I found these images of the bird drinking water..... there is something about the repetitive nature that the bird has that I relate to time and I thought this had potential for a design that would communicate the metaphor of an if/else statement...
The next images I found in relation to flesh light code.....with this code I liked the relation of colour and movement in relation to the if/else statement....
This is an image of a lava lamp...... I think aesthetically this image is very similar to the code however if I were to carry through with this idea I would make it more interactive eg. a person can shake the jar to make the parts move
This is an image of burning metal it causes great sparks of light and movement which relates the if else statement very well..... if I were to carry this idea I would make it a multi media design combination of a still with moving images shot onto it..
The last idea is using light to write in the dark I think it also shows how light and movement can show a reaction...... I would make this an interactive think perhaps using a black box and writing with glow in the dark ink like you can get with glowsticks............
The next lot of images relate to the gravity pulsar again I believe the colour and movement help relate the the if/else statement......

The first idea is quite simple using a colour wheel to combine primary colours to create secondary colours possibly even tertiary colours....... using the simple idea of mixing colours and using movement.....
The next idea is related to watercolour and water & colour..... it will show the interaction between water and added colours using the idea of fluidity.... If I were to carry out this idea I would use mix media of a video being projected on still images.....
The last idea and possibly my favourite idea is the use of a gobo and lighting....... so there is normal light but when a template is added a pattern or colour will show if another pattern or colour is added then another thing will show...... I think this would be the perfect metaphor for what if/else statements are.... simple idea and interactive....
